Physical Activity
Active Children;
-
Concentrate and Learn more / Perform better in school
-
Have fewer discipline problems
-
Enjoy school more
It is recommended that children receive at least 60 minutes of exercise every day. The reality is that most children dont receive this.
In Scoil Chaitríona we encourage our children to be as physically active as possible; during break times, during class time (brain breaks) and also outside of school. Scroll down to learn more.

Break Times
When we started the Active School process we made a number of changes on our playground. Firstly, our committee members became 'Playground Leaders'. Playground leaders take charge of ensuring equipment is brought out and collected from yard. This includes setting up Zoned Areas for skipping, hoola hoops and ball games. They also ensure our younger pupils are keeping active and are engaged in fun games and activities.
We introduced our Active Walkway and opened up our school grounds to allow children do laps around the building. We very much promote a 'Do your talking while you're walking!' rule on yard.
Before we return to class we do some exercises in our Active lines lead by our Playground Leaders.

Active Walkway
Since launching our Active Walkway last year it has proven to be a big hit with our pupils. Our children love counting their laps at break time. Some even get a few laps in before school in the morning. Whether jogging, walking or completing circuit exercises at each marker, the activity levels of our pupils has increased greatly.

Running Challenge
For the past two years we have been taking on running initiatives in our school. 8 laps of our school accumulates to 1 km. In our running challenge we try to run 1 Km every day.
This has been a very effective initiative and has created healthier , fitter and more confident runners among our pupils. Challenges we have tried to date are "Run around Europe", "K a Day" and this year we even started a second challenge "Run around Ireland" in which we run to a new landmark each day.

Extra-Curricular
As a DEIS School we believe in delivering equal opportunity to our pupils. We do our best to help our pupils participate in as many sports and activities as possible. Mr.Kelly takes boys and girls for Gaelic Football training every week. We participate in the Cumann na mBunscoil for Gaelic Football, the Spar 5 a side for soccer, Small School Athletics and Sportshall Athletics.
We have also participated in local Rounders competitions.

Dance Station
A great idea from our Active Committee was to introduce a Dancing Station on yard. When finally the sun came out we rolled out our speakers and blasted music into the air.
Much to the amusement and surprise of our teaching staff we found we had some very impressive dancers (the children more so than the adults!)
The Dance Station has been a massive hit adding an extra bit of happiness to our dynamic and fun playground.

Active Breaks
It can be a long day sitting in the classroom. Throughout our day we try to have movement or 'wriggle' breaks. These breaks leave our children feeling healthier, happier and more focused. It could be a short workout on GoNoodle , some stretching and mobility work or a dance routine from 'Just Dance'.

Skipping
Last year we had skipping expert Mark Mc Cabe visit our school. He spent over an hour with each class teaching the basics, fun games and even some cool tricks. Since then the Skipping Bug has taken over. We see children practising in our yard on the daily with some very impressive tricks!
