Physical Education

In Scoil Chaitríona we aim to have at least 60 minutes of P.E. a week. We deliver a broad and balanced P.E. Curriculum which includes all the strands; Aquatics, Athletics, Dance, Games, Gymnastics and Outdoor & Adventure.

Each year we focus on a different strand for improvement and this year we are focusing on improving Athletics.

The Fundamental Movement Skills we are focusing on are Walking and Running.

Athletics can provide a strong foundation for children to develop their fitness, participate in various sports and feel healthier and happier.

We introduce our children to athletics in a fun, engaging and non competitive environment.

All our teachers have attended the Move Well Move Often Workshops and focus on teaching our pupils the 'Fundamental Movements' needed to improve co-ordination and movement.

Athletics

Games

In 2018-19 Scoil Chaitríona focused on improving our teaching of the Games strand.

Our children had the opportunity to try out a variety of games including gaelic football, hurling, tag rugby, basketball and volleyball. We have had coaches from Spain (Basketball), the Ulster Council, Aodh Rua GAA and Ballyshannon Rugby Club come in to support the teaching of each game. This year we have introduced Olympic Handball as a new sport.

Aquatics

Each year Scoil Chaitríona spend an 8 week block of our second term visiting our local leisure centre. Second class and upwards participate in swimming lessons with dedicated instructors.

Our whole school also participate in the Land PAWS programme.

PAWS teaches children how to be safe around water in homes, farms, pools, beaches and on our waterways, and is written and designed for different age groups.

Dance

We love any excuse to bust a move in Scoil Chaitríona. Our teaching staff attended a Dance workshop in Letterkenny in 2017.

Former pupil of the school Amanda, coached our pupils for a 6 week block of Hip Hop Classes last year. During Seachtain na Gaeilge we always have fun with jigs and reels in the hall.

During wet play on rainy days our pupils love to dance in the classroom to GoNoodle on the Interactive Whiteboard.

Gymnastics

We are lucky enough to have our own hall for teaching gymnastics, fully equipped with a wooden box vault, balance benches and gym mats. Here our pupils learn different types of balances, rolls and jumps.

Outdoor and Adventure

We love any excuse to explore the great outdoors in Scoil Chaitríona.

As part of our Outdoor and Adventure strand we equip our pupils with the skills to work both individually and as a team to take on outdoor exercises such as forest walks, trails and orienteering.
